The most important project on Palm Beach P.I. Angel Devlin's calendar is the upcoming Alzheimer's charitable gala. Angel has gotten the support of reclusive billionaire Holt Hudson, who has agreed to host the fundraiser. Her one problem is a determined party crasher named Tom Donovan.

Until recently Tom knew nothing about his father's infamous death. When he was just 4, reformed burglar Chase Donovan was shot and killed by his best friend—and Tom's godfather—Holt Hudson. Tom was raised by his paternal grandfather, who kept silent on the matter, but now that Tom has inherited millions from his maternal grandparents, he finally has the resources to discover the truth.

Angel is torn between wanting to help Tom uncover the truth about his father and her concern about the upcoming fundraiser. Like most things in life, nothing is quite as it seems.

A touch of mystery adds spice to this latest gem by the always terrific Berg. Interesting characters with depth and motivations make this fascinating reading. (Jul., 384 pp., $6.99)
