Love, guilt and grief are twisted into a warped and dangerous medley where vigilante vengeance prevails. Burton does an outstanding job of slowly revealing the character and motives of the players in her dark drama. Creepy and terrifying, it will give you chills.

Lindsay O'Neil's horrific past has shaped her life, from her job running a battered women's shelter to the breakup of her marriage. That same past is about to place her at the center of
a deadly maelstrom. Unbeknownst to Lindsay, she has a "guardian" who's been watching and decides that it's time for vengeance.

When the body of a wife abuser is left next to the shelter -- and the man's severed hand is delivered to Lindsay as a gift -- her estranged husband, Det. Zack Kier, is assigned to the case. But this is only the beginning. The guardian has big plans, and the unwelcome attention is bringing danger ever closer to Lindsay. (ZEBRA, Dec., 384 pp., $6.99)
