This dark thriller has nonstop action — including violence and mutilation. Ellison delivers gruesome murders, surprising villains, interesting characters and plenty of chills. A subplot that is told through flashbacks features another killing spree as well as providing some backstory for Taylor’s fiancé.

Taylor Jackson is back as head of the murder squad. Nashville is in a panic when eight teenagers are ritualistically murdered on Halloween. When a “good witch” shows up at the homicide office offering to help, Taylor has doubts. She and her fiancé, FBI profiler Baldwin, try to make sense of the murders while grappling with issues of their own. At the same time, Baldwin is called back to D.C. to explain irregularities in an old serial killer case and may lose his job. (MIRA, Oct., 400 pp., $7.99)
