Half of occult special investigator Tess Corday’s heritage remains a mystery, but in this new chapter of Battis’ terrific OSI series, new clues appear. Tess’ continued struggle to juggle her unconventional home life and demanding career adds realism and emotional punch to the supernatural dangers she faces. A consistently excellent series by an author on the rise!

An urgent early morning summons from OSI sends Tess, Derrick, Lucian and Miles to the local morgue to retrieve the body of a boy, who is most likely not a boy and not really dead. During the retrieval a very large demon arrives and tries to kill them all. After a major battle, the team manages to capture the demon named Basuram and take him, as well as the boy demon Ru, back to headquarters. According to Basuram, the High Court of the Ferid sent him to retrieve Ru for some unspecified crime. Ru’s memories have been damaged, so the truth remains a mystery. As Earth is generally recognized as asylum space, Tess and crew are not inclined to hand Ru over. However, as Tess hunts down clues, she finds the answers may lead her to revelations regarding her own origins. (ACE, Jun., 320 pp., $7.99)
