Cremer once again proves her ability to build an intriguing world, using an exciting and less common concept in YA: alternate history. The historical relevancy here is spot-on. However, the descriptions of steampunk technology become exhausting, and this reader had a hard time connecting to the large cast of characters, who could’ve been fleshed out further. But overall this is a fun, original read.

What if the colonies didn’t win the Revolutionary War? What would steampunk-era America look like? Charlotte is a colonial refugee, hiding from indentured servitude with other young adults while their parents mobilize a resistance.
