Wolff throws you into the action right away with her first Watchers novel. The protagonist is smart and tough, but still vulnerable. There are echoes of various vampire academy books, but this story stands on its own. The ending is beyond cliffhanger in its abruptness, but it does leave you wanting more.

Social misfit Anneliese was the smart girl, but she loses her head when the darkly seductive Ronan convinces her to go to Eyja naeturinnar, the Isle of Night, and attend a special academy there. But once they arrive, Anneliese realizes it’s a school to train girls to be Watchers, human assistants to the ancient vampires who live on the isle. And the competition to become a Watcher is deadly.
