IT STARTED THAT NIGHT (3) by Virna DePaul: Detective John Tyler suspects that Lily Cantrell, his former childhood sweetheart, is a potential victim in a string of serial killings. The man accused of killing Lily’s mother 15 years earlier is about to be executed. But recent similar killings have caused John to suspect that they have the wrong man. However, John burned his bridges with Lily just before her mother’s murder, and getting Lily to trust him again proves difficult. The mystery is intriguing, but the opening is slowed by too much background information, and the characters aren’t immediately likable.
