The forbidden romance between a heroine who is essentially a princess and a “nobody” is one readers will root for. However, the “pureblood” focus on who’s acceptable and who isn’t brings a sociopolitical element into play that is too much for this novella-length story. With all the worldbuilding and romance vying for a place here, too much is left unfinished, and the politics that aren’t addressed distract from the romance.

Panther shifter Santiago Flores moved to the Lone Pine Pride at the insistence of a friend — but also because of the draw of a lion shifter he can never have. Daughter of the alpha, Lila Fallon has had her life planned out for her since birth. But it’s not until her engagement to the alpha’s successor is announced that Santiago makes his move, and he’s determined that Lila should be able to make her own choices — and that one of them be him.
