Book two in the Ministry of Peculiar Occurrences series is much like the first: It’s steampunk by the numbers, with very few surprises for the genre’s devoted readers. If all you require of your steampunk is beautiful airships and amazing guns, you’ll be well satisfied with this one.

Wellington Books and Eliza Braun pair up again to solve a mystery that involves a passenger on Britain’s new hypersteam train vanishing in a bolt of lightning. When research into historical files reveals that this isn’t the first such instance, they’re thrown into working with Bruce Campbell to solve the cases that the Crown has seemingly ignored. Naturally the fate of England is at stake, and if Books and Braun can’t solve the mysterious disappearances, who knows who, or what, will vanish next! (HARPER VOYAGER, Jun., 432 pp., $7.99)
