Young adults should have no problem relating to Carlson’s latest, the first in a new series. In this ugly duckling tale, Carlson strives to show the importance of finding one’s true self. The characters use an interesting experiment to drive that concept home.

Chelsea Martin has always been somewhat shy and nerdy … until her soon-to-be stepmother decides to give her a makeover. With a new look to begin a new school, Chelsea hopes to find the true friend she has never had and she believes that person could be Janelle Parker. Chelsea is now attracting a lot of attention. The problem: the guys are jerks, which is why shy Janelle dubs her a “jerk magnet.” In an attempt to prove that looks alone do not make the girl, Chelsea and Janelle formulate a plan.
