JEWEL OF THE PACIFIC
The final book in the amazing Dawn of Hawaii series continues the tale of Rafe and Eden from 1999’s For Whom the Stars Shine. The characters are well written and Chaikin brings to life the troubling times before Hawaii became a state, writing sensitively and respectfully about the plight of residents of the leper colonies of that time.
Rafe Easton has one more important decision to make before he marries Eden, which means leaving her and the island during uneasy times. He sends her a letter explaining his departure, but Eden never receives it and misunderstandings guide her decisions to the wrong conclusions. Will they be able to have a future together or is it too late? (River North, Apr., 352 pp., $14.99)
