JOY FOR BEGINNERS
This utterly inspiring novel will remind readers that we all have burdens to bear, though some are more apparent than others. There are no real descriptions of the seven female characters, which normally would be a sore point, but in this case, it allows readers to identify with all of the characters and their struggle to reclaim a part of their lives.
Kate is a breast cancer survivor who is about to embark on a white-water rapids trip with her daughter. Because she is taking a chance and doing something out of her comfort zone, she challenges her closest friends to do the same. Kate gives them their tasks in hopes that it will allow them to let go of their own insecurities and rediscover happiness. (PUTNAM, Jun., 288 pp., $24.95)
