JUST LET GO … (2) by Kathleen O’Reilly: After the “easy-loving, easy-lying” Austen Hart stands up Gillian Wanamaker at the prom, he leaves town without explanation. Ten years later, Gillian is the sheriff of their hometown. Austen, now a political lobbyist, has returned to screw the town over in a business deal that involves the governor’s daughter, whom Austen is sleeping with. The hero’s behavior is despicable — and disturbing — both in and out of the bedroom: At one point, he is so rough with Gillian that he actually reaches for a phone to dial an ambulance because he thinks he has “hammered” her to death. Just Let Go … is an anomaly: a romance novel completely devoid of romance.
