Byrd somehow manages to surpass herself with this second Dangerous Tides novel. Dark, suspenseful and engrossing, each taut scene is packed with enough tension to keep readers breathless. Byrd wisely crafts complete, three-dimensional characters, and seems unafraid of allowing her lead couple to show their flaws and shortcomings, and lets them wrestle their demons, even as they navigate a blistering relationship that remakes them both completely. Though newcomers can enjoy this book alone, the ties between the characters make this a series to savor in its entirety.

Detective Alex Hudson swore off women five years ago when his marriage collapsed. Though he put most of his demons behind him, he is still determined to keep the world at bay, no matter the cost. Yet, somehow, therapist Brit Cramer has managed to get under Alex’s skin. Brit has always thought Alex unbearably sexy, but his infuriating attitude has kept her away. When a former patient begins threatening her, it’s Alex who comes to her rescue. Now, forced together in a race against a crazed stalker, Brit and Alex will find a passion they never imagined — and a love neither can believe is true. (HEAT, Jun., 304 pp., $15.00)
