Fast-paced and utterly fascinating, Brand's latest draws together a wickedly intriguing variety of elements and characters and leaves the reader breathless. So does the explosive chemistry between Taylor and Steve.

Having almost become one of drug lord Alex Lopez's victims, FBI agent Taylor Jones now has a personal stake in bringing him down. But an attempt on Taylor's life takes her off the case --
and turns her into a protected witness. Relocated from D.C., Taylor winds up in Vermont, working as a personal trainer, where she meets Steve Fischer. Attracted but wary, Taylor keeps her distance from him -- until her elderly neighbor is murdered.

At that point, Fischer reveals that he's
a security expert and ex-SEAL. That's comforting, especially when someone takes another shot at Taylor. But Fischer hasn't told her everything: He has a personal stake in the Lopez case that has nothing to do with her. (MIRA, Dec., 400 pp., $6.99)
