Facing the past and looking toward the future is the theme of Vaughn’s newest Kitty Norville novel as both Kitty and her vampire friend Rick are confronted with memories of the past. This book in particular feels like Vaughn is setting up pieces on the chessboard of her long game plotline in preparation for bold new developments. As always Kitty is irreverent, funny, insightful and compassionate.

Kitty, Ben and Master Vampire Rick are attempting to gather allies for the upcoming war against ancient vampire Roman. However, Rick’s attention is diverted when a vampire priest arrives tempting him with the possibility of a reconnection with his religion. Kitty, too, is tested when a lone werewolf arrives in town wanting to join her pack. Kitty soon suspects there is more to this new wolf when he begins challenging her authority.
