Over the course of this series, readers have had a front-row seat to the mysterious evolution of Harper Blaine from ordinary P.I. to Greywalker to … . The stage is now set for a terrifying confrontation and Richardson pulls out all the stops, making this novel a fast-paced and terrifying ride. Richardson’s ability to spin a complex and riveting story is undeniable and the proof is on the page. Kudos!

Returning from London, Harper learns the situation in Seattle is deteriorating rapidly and everyone she cares about is in serious jeopardy. Part of what Harper learned during her London adventure is that former god and pharaoh Wygan plans to force an evolutionary change on Harper and then use her abilities to instigate his grand plan. In order to prevent this, Harper needs more information, and to get it she must unlock puzzles from the past and contact her deceased father, who is held prisoner in the Grey. Although Harper’s powers are growing, she faces the dangers not only from Wygan but the Grey itself. (ROC, Aug., 368 pp., $24.95)
