Visions of South Philadelphia and mafia connections fill the pages of this expertly penned novel, which has twists aplenty. Readers will adore the tough yet tender lawyer heroine, Mary DiNunzio, who is both believable and eminently likable.

Mary is surprised when Trish Gambone, a high school classmate, shows up in her office. Trish's boyfriend, a man with ties to the South Philly mob, is physically abusive, and Trish fears for her life. But when she comes to the conclusion that there's nothing Mary can do, she flees her office.

Mary becomes distraught and guilt-ridden when Trish goes missing, and Trish's friends, the Mean Girls of St. Maria Goretti High, blame Mary for Trish's disappearance. But Mary, the former high school straight-A student voted most likely to achieve sainthood, has matured from the meek girl of her teen years. Determined to find out what happened to Trish, she fears the worst when police inform her that they've discovered a body. (HarperCollins, Feb., 336 pp., $25.95)
