Readers will be delighted that Levine has brought back Lassiter after a 14-year absence. The courtroom scene alone is worth the price of admission since Jake has not lost his touch. A marvelous cast propels this fast-moving novel.
Jake Lassiter is caught up in a case that might end his legal career. Amy Larkin had accused him of having knowledge about her sister’s disappearance 18 years earlier. He does know more than he’s saying about Krista, a teenage runaway turned porn actress. He tries to follow the cold trail but runs up against powerful men who also knew her. Then a suspect is shot and Amy is arrested. The former linebacker will need all his wits about him as he defends her, especially since she won’t provide him with her alibi.
