Noah Chase and Gracie Taylor bonded the first day of kindergarten. Gracies mother was killed in a car accident when she was a baby, and her father is an alcoholic. It is Grandma Del who raises Gracie. Del works for Simon and Ruth Chase, the owners of the Idle Point, Maine Gazette.

Noahs father is determined that his son and Gracie not become friends. He even sent Noah away to boarding school. When Noah and Gracie attend college, they reconnect and fall deeply in love. They plan to elope when Simon gives Gracie news that sends her fleeing into the night.

Now Gracie is coming home to Idle Point. Noah has also recently returned, with a 5-year-old daughter. Secrets and dark emotions have kept these lovers separated for years. Can the secrets now be unveiled and the truth revealed?

Ms. Bretton takes the star-crossed lovers plot and turns it into her own convincing and distinctive storyline. Ms. Brettons writing style is wonderfully suited for complex human emotions. (Nov., 320 pp., $6.99)
