Ramsay’s romance packs just enough heat in this holiday-inspired story, with lead characters who will induce both belly laughs and smiles. Her hero and heroine are in for rough times, but their heartache and longing had me longing right along with them.

Lark Chaikin came to Last Chance, S.C., to fulfill her father’s last wish of spreading his ashes there, but the residents have long memories of her dad’s short visit and the deadly mystery surrounding it. Lark doesn’t need more trouble; she’s fighting her own demons — not to mention the feelings a certain cop is stirring.

Stone Rhodes needs Lark like a hole in his head. He’s still recovering from the death of his wife, and he has a hard enough time taking care of his daughters and his family, while being the top cop in his town. But he can’t deny his attraction to Lark, who has stumbled into trouble — and danger. Learning to trust their hearts may lead to happiness — if they survive to try. (FOREVER, Oct., 352 pp., $7.99)
