THE LAST COWBOY
A fascinating story of horse endurance racing and the history of the mustang, with a bit of romance on the side. There tends to be an overabundance of detail offered in some areas and a lack in others. Information is often repeated and the hero has little knowledge of cattle, which he is supposed to be raising.
Dr. Jordana Lawton brings her mustang mare to Tetons Ranch so Slade McPherson can give both of them endurance training. Slade is a champion at endurance riding and, to supplement his cattle ranch income, trains others in it. Slade’s past gives him no desire to work with a woman. However, he needs the money and finds both Jordana and her mare worthy students. Things are going well between them, but the arrival of Slade’s brother, down on his luck, brings stress and trouble to Slade. (HQN, Nov., 384 pp., $7.99)
