THE LAST GRAVE

With this second book in the fascinating Witch Hunter series, Viguié delivers another wonderful read. The obstacles our heroine faces keep the pace steady and exciting, and the challenges themselves are especially interesting. Sam’s struggles with remaining faithful to the religion that saved her life while delving deep into the world of witchcraft leave the series feeling fresh and interesting, earning a place on my “must read” list.

Leaving her past in Massachusetts behind, homicide detective Samantha Ryan heads to San Francisco for a fresh start. But inevitably her past catches up with her. She can’t run from who she is: a witch hunter. The murder of a local historian takes Sam to the Santa Cruz Mountains to investigate a witch’s coven which is using black magic, intent on doing evil. Working on the connection between Winona Lightfoot’s murder and the witches brings Sam right back to a point of crisis. Her abilities are all that can save her and the people surrounding her, and the temptation to use magic grows strong. The dark power that is quaking the Bay Area is on the ascendant, and Sam is the only one who can stop it. (SIGNET, Mar., 368 pp., $7.99)
