LAURA AND THE LUMBERJACK

While the Saskatchewan wilderness is beautifully described, this book has some problems, particularly a lot of contrived situations. How Laura doesn’t immediately know Tyler isn’t her fiancé — even with the beard — doesn’t make sense. Also, the book is formatted with so much white space that it’s not nearly 196 pages long.

Laura has been searching for her missing fiancé, Ross, in the wilderness. When Tyler rescues her from a snowdrift, he doesn’t realize the changes it will bring to his life. When Laura wakes up, she mistakes Tyler for her fiancé, who has been missing for six months. He kisses her, but it’s Ross’ name she calls. When the snow thaws somewhat, he is able to go to her car for some of her belongings and to the logging camp where he works. Initially, Tyler doesn’t tell her he’s working so close to home because he likes her nearby. Once she finds out, she starts working there as well but in the kitchen. An attack on Laura by one of the loggers precipitates changes to both of their lives. (GARDEN PATH, Aug., 196 pp., $6.99)
