This intense, absorbing effort from Hunt has enough twists to satisfy any reader ... and the solution should surprise even CSI junkies.

The murder of Senator Jeffrey Tomassi seems to be an open-and-shut case. He was found dead in his own bed, the apparent victim of an insulin overdose administered by his wife, Erin. The attorney assigned to Erin, Briley Lester, has never handled a murder case before and is completely out of her depth. But Briley's determined to do right by her. And it isn't long until the real Jeffrey Tomassi is revealed.

An abusive adulterer, he was protected by everyone -- especially his wealthy, influential family -- because of his golden political future. Briley has several possible defense strategies, but all involve Erin acknowledging responsibility for her husband's death -- and she won't agree to that. More digging convinces Briley that Erin may be telling the truth ... but can she sell it to the jury? (MIRA, Dec., 384 pp., $7.99)
