This is the third book featuring Jo Beckett, but newcomers will find it easy to dive right in — and then rush out to get the first two. Gardiner admirably handles never-see-it-coming twists sure to delight. Beckett is wonderful, compassionate yet tough, lightly sarcastic and independent. The ending will leave you breathless.

Tasia McFarland, country singer and ex-wife of the U.S. president, is making a spectacular entrance to her concert by sliding down a zip line while firing blanks out of her Colt .45, when a single bullet to her neck kills her. Since they can’t find the bullet, they don’t know if it came from her gun, so the police call in forensic psychiatrist Jo Beckett for assistance. Beckett discovers paranoid lyrics to a song Tasia was working on, leading Beckett to wonder whether her death is part of a larger plot. (DUTTON, Jun., 368 pp., $25.95)
