When 17-year-old Toby wakes up from what he thinks is a standard hibernation, he discovers he’s actually been asleep for 14,000 years. Unfortunately for the novel’s pacing, this means the book’s other characters spend much of the first half of the novel explaining what has happened in the passing centuries. The massive changes the universe has undergone keep the story interesting, however, especially some surprising revelations about his family.
Nothing could prepare Toby McGonigal for the many changes his universe has seen since he first entered hibernation millennia ago. He awakes to find he’s the heir to a whole galactic empire, and soon becomes a pawn in the politics of the various factions who all have something to gain. For his part, Toby only wants to be reunited with the family he once knew, but after an unpleasant discovery, he must decide where his loyalties lie. (TOR, Apr., 352 pp., $27.00)
