Free spirited Sally Driver was the absolute opposite of her late husband, a conservative attorney who married her after shed become pregnant. Now hes dead and she must sort through his belongings. Sally never thought shed find a packet of love letters written by another woman hed been involved with during their marriage. All she knows is the womans name Laura.

Furious, Sally turns to the one man she doesnt want to lean on: Todd Sloan, her husbands best friend. Todd never liked Sallys weird new age ways or how she forced Paul to marry her. But this doesnt compare to how angry he becomes upon finding out that Paul had another woman.

Though the characters seem slightly caricatured, Ms. Arnold does a nice job of setting in motion a search, where what is found might not be whats looked for. (Aug., 384 pp., $5.99)
