Major Lord Mark Adair finds a true friend in Sophia, the daughter of the famous Lord Harry. Sophia is a talented artist and excellent judge of character who is completely immune to the charms of young soldiers, having grown up following the drum.

But Love makes a sneak attack on these two vulnerable hearts and shows them that sometimes even the best of friends need to step beyond the boundaries of their relationship in order to experience life to its fullest.

Evelyn Richardsons grasp of the details of camp life is excellent and her characters are finely drawn and sympathetic. The tale moves a bit slowly and falters a little toward the end, before providing readers with the appropriate happy ending.
