Though Porter’s story is a little confusing, it eventually pulls together to become a thought-provoking, touching tale about how to hold on to your true self even when others are not.
Luce is stuck living with her uncle, a once-kind man now prone to violent tantrums. One night he crosses the line and Luce falls into the ocean, but instead of drowning she becomes a beautiful mermaid and is welcomed into a tribe of other mermaids who had once been lost like herself. Luce may have finally found a place she belongs, but the other mermaids want to use their enchanted voices to lure seafarers to their death in vengeance for what happened to them. If Luce does not take part in their plans, will she be banished? Will she resort to committing murder just to finally fit in? (HARCOURT, Jul., 304 pp., $16.99, ISBN: 9780547482507, HC, 12 & Up)
