Widowed Lady Sophy Marlowe vows to never marry again. Gossip has it that she murdered her husband.

Confirmed bachelor Viscount Ives Harrington finds himself having to marry and produce an heir. Interested in meeting Sophy because of the tangled threads that once bound Ivess brother to her mother, Ives renews his pledge of revenge against Sophys family. When Ivess godfather, the Duke of Roxbury, requests his aid in catching the spy known as The Fox, Ives is only too glad to help.

Both in town for the season, Ivess plans for revenge against Sophy are soon forgotten when he becomes enamored of her. When Sophys uncle is found dead, Ives comes to her defense and his offer of marriage saves her from being accused of murder.

Though Sophy comes to love Ives, she is somewhat distrustful of him.
All becomes clear when they become involved in a life-threatening game
of espionage and intrigue.
