Book Review

by Julie Lessman

Genre: Inspirational, Historical Romance

RT Rating

Lessman’s fans will welcome this series premiere, though it could do with more action and less gabbing. She tackles the realities of physical passion and unsavory moral compromises. Though the novel sometimes drags, readers are encouraged to persevere for two payoffs, including a touching scene in which the hero’s sister dispenses spiritual advice that will likely stay with you forever.

Jilted by a fortune-hunting cad, spunky Texan Cassie McClare arrives at her aunt’s home in turn-of- the-century San Francisco to mend her broken heart and devote her life to teaching. Handsome lawyer Jamie MacKenna has bootstrapped himself up from the city’s slums and is now hunting for a rich, well-connected wife who can finance his sister’s life-saving operation. Cassie and Jamie know they’re not meant for each other — but sometimes God has other plans. (REVELL, Apr., 416 pp., $14.99)
