Book Review

by Melanie Dobson

Genre: Inspirational, Historical Fiction

RT Rating

Dobson’s research shows in every chapter. The details and charming facts of Mackinac Island are illustrated perfectly. Although the island could have taken on a life of its own, the characters are vibrant enough and have a strong enough story to balance things. This book has everything a reader looks for in historical fiction.

Elena Bissette’s family has lost a fortune, but they still own a lovely home on Mackinac Island. They travel there again this season, with the plan to find Elena a wealthy suitor. The finer things in life have never mattered much to Elena, however. She meets a local fisherman named Chase, and they begin to meet in secret to learn the mystery of a local lighthouse. Meanwhile, Elena’s mother plots for her to meet an elusive millionaire. Elena’s worlds come crashing together for an amazing surprise. (SUMMERSIDE, Aug., 320 pp., $12.99)
