The horrifying premise of this taut thriller is slowly revealed as Butcher takes her protagonists on a terrifying journey. Guilt and the need to protect are driving forces behind the actions of a hero and heroine who are racing against time and a twisted killer. Butcher continues to prove her writing chops by delivering a story that's not for the faint of heart yet resonates with the power of love.

When her artistic and flighty sister Ashley doesn't check in with her usual call, freelance reporter Elise McBride gets concerned. Not satisfied with the police response, Elise flies back from Hong Kong and attempts to break into Ashley's house to look for answers. Ex-cop Trent Brady witnesses Elise's break-in at his neighbor's house and apprehends her. Despite not want-
ing to get involved with police work, Trent realizes that unless he helps Elise, her stubborn determination will get her into trouble. As they retrace Ashley's steps, they learn of other missing women and the gruesome discovery
of severed body parts. Can Trent and Elise find Ashley in time? (FOREVER, Oct., 400 pp., $6.99)
