RT Rating

Fast-paced action and Ryan’s sharp wit make the latest Mattie Winston mystery a winner. Well plotted and filled with intriguing characters, the developments in Mattie’s relationship with her police detective boyfriend really shine in this story. Their romance runs the gamut of obstacles, and there’s an unexpected twist at the end.

Deputy Coroner Mattie returns to solve the murder of a disabled man who had recently won big at the local casino. An apparent case of arson becomes a homicide when it is discovered that the homeowner died before the fire started, which has destroyed much of the evidence at the scene. An empty safe reveals that the victim’s win may have been a stroke of bad luck. Mattie and officer Steve Hurley head to the casino to see what they can learn about the victim and those who knew about his winnings. (KENSINGTON, Mar., 366 pp., $7.99)
