Godbersen's ambitious debut takes us back to the Gilded Age of New York, when teens had grown-up problems (and off-camera love scenes). Despite an all-too-obvious twist ending, this is a quick and entertaining trip back in time.
Just back from a season in Paris, Elizabeth Holland, the darling of New York society, finds herself reunited with a scheming best friend, a widowed and worried-looking mother and a sister who couldn't be less interested in societal rules. Her mother wants her engaged, and fast, but Elizabeth's heart lies elsewhere. (HARPERTEEN, Nov., 448 pp., $17.99, ISBN: 9780061345661, 14 and Up, HC)
