Johnson’s thoroughly entertaining Shades of London series continues in this second installment. The pace is swift, the characters well drawn and the ending a genuine, jaw-dropping shock.

Rory Deveaux is back at Wexford Academy after her eventful first stint, in which she gained the ability to see ghosts, learned of a secret ghost police force and was almost killed by a ghostly Jack the Ripper copycat. She now has the ability to extinguish ghosts with a touch and while her friends and teachers are glad to have her back, there are those who would like to use Rory’s abilities for their own nefarious purposes.
