Book Review

by L.E. Modesitt Jr.

Genre: Fantasy, General Fantasy

RT Rating

Fans of Modesitt's Recluce books will likely love this latest addition to the series, but first-time readers will be completely lost by the end of the first chapter. Newcomers may also find that it takes a long while to warm up to the characters. Rahl is a well-crafted protagonist with believable reactions to the world around him, and the high level of ordinary detail describing Hamor and Recluce never get in the way of the story.

Rahl has returned to Recluce
at the bidding of the Emperor of Hamor, accompanied by his mentor, Taryl. But he won't be able to stay there for long. Once again Rahl, with the healer Deybri at his side, proves to have the rare but invaluable combination of skills and abilities needed to serve the emperor. (Tor, Jul., 656 pp., $27.95)
