The importance of memories is starkly exhibited in the second chapter of this impressive series. Monk casts her atmosphere with a dark pall, and the secrets revealed only lead to more questions. This author has major storytelling chops and is fast becoming a force in the genre!

Having mostly recovered from the coma that resulted from her last magical disaster, "Hound" Allie Beckstrom just wants to restart her life. But that's easier said than done. For starters, she must deal with the ramifications of her father's death and find new work.

A job offer from the police's magical enforcement division places Allie on a missing-persons case that's much more than it seems. She must also deal with the mysterious Zayvion Jones, a man she fell in love with but now cannot remember. Can she trust him? Dark magic and blood magic are being used, and that can only spell danger for Allie. (ROC, May, 368 pp., $6.99)
