Image of Magic to the Bone (Allie Beckstrom, Book 1)

With style and a magical world that is quite fresh, Monk explodes on the scene and makes a few waves! What makes this story and heroine unusual is that due to magical consequences, at times the reader will know more about recent first-person events than the heroine does. For sheer guts, stubbornness and determination, they don't come much feistier than Allie.

Angered by her father's business ethics, Allie Beckstrom cut all ties to his Portland empire and works as a "hound" tracking down the illegal offloading of magic. Using magic always has a cost, and there are those who offload that cost onto the innocent. Allie can identify the original spell caster to force reparations.

When Allie is summoned to the side of a child dying from an offload, she is horrified to discover that the caster's signature is that of her father. Confronting him and finding the truth turn out to be much more complicated and dangerous than she expected. (ROC, Nov., 368 pp., $6.99)
