Image of Magic Lost, Trouble Found (Raine Benares, Book 1)

The old saying "no good deed goes unpunished" is quite apt in this edgy and fascinating first-person adventure. In her auspicious debut, Shearin populates her series with a variety of supernatural characters with a multitude of motives. Following along as this tough and feisty woman kicks butt and takes names is a most enjoyable way to spend your time.

Raine Benares is an elf sorceress of moderate power whose main gift is finding missing items. She intervenes during a robbery and winds up bonded to a treacherous artifact. Now Raine is hunted by a variety of dangerous individuals and caught up in the middle of a royal goblin feud.

To her dismay, she discovers that the amulet around her neck is derived from a soul-stealing stone, and while it boosts Raine own powers, it could also take possession of her. How does Raine keep the amulet out of dangerous hands without getting herself and her friends killed? (ACE, Jun., 352 pp., $7.99)
