Jon and Julie Radcliff's marriage is on the verge of collapse. Divorce is imminent. But, they've promised their youngest, Ashley, a family Christmas, so they must endure the holiday.

An advertisement for the Virginia Oak River Plantation sounds like just the holiday getaway they need. When the Radcliffs arrive, they find the plantation a remote oasis, almost untouched by time. Proprietors Clarissa and Jesse Wainscott are warm, friendly people, even if they do wear Civil War-era costumes. Little Ashley is the first to realize that there is something very special and magical about the plantation. For one thing, no one ever sees Jesse or Clarissa together, and they speak almost longingly of their spouse.

Teenagers Christie and Jordan face their own problems. Christie loves a boy her father finds completely unacceptable, and Jordan has been experimenting with drugs. There's something for each member of the family to learn from the Wainscotts, if they are smart enough to realize it. Can this family be saved?

With her first Topaz hardcover, Heather Graham gives us a wonderful ghostly holiday fable. An enchanting and heartwarming story, A MAGICAL CHRISTMAS is a perfect gift for the season. (Nov., 256 pp., $14.95)
