Using a tried-and-true storyline, Maynard delivers a pleasant blend of scorching sex and intrigue. But a lover who comes off as cold and sadistic coupled with stock characters make the whole less satisfying than its parts.
Nola Grainger's recently deceased grandmother has put her in a real pickle. To fulfill the terms of the will, Nola must find a husband in a month. So the successful photographer moves back to her Southern hometown and the house that has been in her family for generations. Nola has three husband candidates -- the high school sweetheart who broke her heart, her wealthy big-city lover and the sexy handyman with secrets.
As if trying to determine which man could be her spouse isn't stressful enough, there are increasingly violent attempts on Nola's life. (SIGNET ECLIPSE, Jul., 304 pp., $15.00)
