Hallie McCarthy decided the time was right to marry. She'd achieved her career goals and lived in a nice condo. She was ready to lose that dreaded ten pounds, find a husband and start a family. Making the plan was easy. Achieving her new goal was not.

Steve Marris had been divorced for a year when he bought the condo next to Hallie. He believed all his ex-wife needed was time, and the two of them would get back together... until his kids told him all about their mom's new boyfriend.

After two disastrous dates left Hallie looking for cab fare at Steve's front door, she decided to sign up for a pricey dating service recommended by a friend. The only good thing to come out of the bad dates was her friendship with Steve and his kids.

What follows is a bouncing ride of the dating game shared by friends not quite sure of the feelings they're discovering for each other.

In the vein of "When Harry Met Sally," Ms. Macomber will delight. She uses her unique voice and sense of humor in her first Mira and readers should rejoice at this "never leave your house" keeper! (Apr., 384 pp., $6.99)
