The story of the retired members of an army Special Forces unit who owe their former colonel favors continues. Col. Garrett feels pressured to retire and pulls in Guy McCann -- the Maverick -- to ask him to pull together the replacement unit in five days. He'll have to work with Julia Beckam, a relationship instructor, to build trust between the team quickly. Guy blames himself for the death of a member of his team, making strong relationships impossible, and Julie wants to help him heal and gain sexual experience from a bad boy. In The Maverick (3), by Rhonda Nelson, the characters are warm and likable, and Guy is a great hero. But some of the subplots, such as tension between Guy and one of the new team, just disappear abruptly.
