MIDNIGHT BLUE-LIGHT SPECIAL
by Seanan McGuire

Genre: Paranormal/Urban Fantasy, Urban Fantasy

RT Rating

McGuire returns with book two in her InCryptid series, and if you loved the wisecracking dancer-cum-monster-savior Verity Price from Discount Armageddon, it’s a good bet you’ll also love this second installment. McGuire raises the stakes, bringing the threat of the Covenant straight into New York City, which in turn ups the danger for Verity and her newfound love, Dominic — a Covenant agent. Or is he? He isn’t quite sure. The developing relationship between Dominic and Verity is one to savor, by turns tender and sharp. Verity’s family tree snaps a little in this one, which is a delight to watch.

Just when Verity thought things couldn’t get more confusing (dragons have returned, she’s possibly in love with a man who should be her enemy and the mice, oh the mice!), she learns that the Covenant will be coming to New York. This means only one thing: They plan to purge the city of its remaining Cryptid population and secure it for humanity. Verity cannot let that happen, but less clear is Dominic’s position, as he has been a true Covenant agent for so very long. Just when Verity thinks the battle can’t get more personal, it does just that. (DAW, Mar., 368 pp., $7.99)
