The Blackthorn brothers may be a thorn in society’s side, but these mad, bad scoundrels are readers’ dream heroes. Michaels delights in bringing readers her special touches of wit and heated passion and if a bit predictable this charming tale enchants and appeals to Michaels’ legion of fans.

Robin “Puck” Blackthorn is a rapscallion who loves life and lives to love, but never with innocents. Regina Hackett is a sheltered miss taking a chance by attending a masquerade with her friend Miranda. One dance with a stranger, one forbidden kiss and her fate is sealed. Regina knows to stay away from notorious rakes, but when Miranda disappears she asks Puck for help. Puck suspects Miranda is one of several blonde women who have recently been abducted, possibly by white slavers. He enlists his brother Jack’s help, along with Regina’s cooperation. Working with Puck, Regina discovers that he is a kind, intelligent and trustworthy man who hides behind his carefree facade. Puck is surprised by his fierce desire to protect Regina. But can he protect his heart? As they plunge into the back alleys and ballrooms of London they are drawn deeper into passion and surprising dangers. (HQN, Dec., 380 pp., $7.99)
