Gwen, an ex-supermodel and psychic, has finally allowed a biography to be written about her late husband, a champion race car driver whose life was tragically cut short. Dylan Mitchell is the writer assigned to the project, and he and his daughter, Randa, move in with Gwen and her daughter, Alli.

Unbeknownst to Dylan, his daughter has become entwined with the same evil psychic that drained the life from her mother. The psychic has been influencing teenagers from the local high school for years. Gwen, meanwhile, has encountered this other psychic in her volunteer work with troubled teens at a shelter run by her ex-rock star best friend.

Intended to be the story of a woman who finally discovers the power she's kept under wraps for so long, this book skips from one improbability to another until everything is wrapped up neatly at the end. There is a distinct lack of focus, and this, combined with lack of realism in characterization, adds up to a difficult read. (Oct. '04, 301 pp., $14.95)
