This delightful, charming addition to the Pink Carnation series will grab fans’ attention, especially with a guest appearance by Jane Austen. Witty and clever, this is one holiday amusement that provides the opportunity to escape with old and new characters while solving a light intrigue.

Even though her best friend Jane tells Miss Arabella Dempsey that teaching is not the profession for her, Arabella takes a position as a junior instructor at a girls’ school. She bumps into Reginald “Turnip” Fitzhugh when he comes to visit his sister Sally. When the two uncover a cryptic message in French inside a Christmas pudding, they are off on an adventure to Farley Castle and the holiday event — a 12-day party hosted by the Dowager Duchess. There’s a traitor about as well as possible French spies, and where there’s pudding there’s also passion. The budding romance escalates, as does the danger. (DUTTON, Nov., 357 pp., $19.95)
