Cresswell begins her new trilogy with this involving, intense story. Well plotted, with characters locked in truthful, heartbreaking conflict, it's a lovely way to spend an afternoon or an evening.

The sudden disappearance of multimillionaire Ron Raven reveals his secret life as a bigamist. Worse than that, Ron used the ranch belonging to his Wyoming wife, Ellie, as collateral for a $3 million loan from Adam Fairfax, the brother of Avery, his wife in Georgia.

Ellie's daughter, Megan, is determined to convince Adam not to foreclose, but he's a tough sell, suspicious of her motives and inclined to believe Megan was a party to Ron's deceit. But the two join forces to figure out what happened. Has Ron been murdered, as the police suspect? Sparks fly, but at least Ellie's ranch is safe -- for now. (MIRA, Sep., 400 pp., $6.99)
